About UsWe are a group of people interested in fungi. We record these at sites throughout Gwent. These records are then submitted to the South East Wales Record Centre and to National Databases. Similar groups occur in most counties in the UK. These records enable mycologists to detect changes in the frequency and distribution of species, for example as a result of climate change. In addition, the spread of fungi “new” to the UK or the decline of those formerly abundant may be followed. So our primary aim is to record species as an aid to conservation but if we find a nice group of edible fungi we are not averse to collecting some to eat. Some members are interested in larger species, others in tiny ones that require microscopic work for identification. The fungi which occur in particular areas, for example woodland, or grassland, form the main interest of other people. Yet others are interested in photography of fungi. We welcome beginners and there will always be people ready to give help with identification.
